John 5:31-47 | OVERFLOW DAILY – Jess Murrieta

7/14/20 – In today’s reading, Jesus’ responds to the religious leaders lack of faith. In this response Jesus acknowledges their religious efforts and knowledge of the scriptures but points out that although they know them they have missed the bigger picture and what the scripture was pointing to the entire time: JESUS HIMSELF. All the Laws and Commands of the Torah and the prophecies for centuries all pointed to this moment and the Pharisees couldn’t see past their traditions, power structures and personal interpretations. We will continue to see this play out through out Johns account but take notice of the heart posture of the religious leaders and how Jesus responds to them

John 4:43-54 | OVERFLOW DAILY – Jess Murrieta

7/11/20 – In todays reading, we see a royal official, someone of high status and power in the local community who is desperate for his dying son to be healed. He finds Jesus and begs him to heal his son. Jesus’ response is interesting in that he acknowledges that people need signs and miracles to believe. Its difficult to figure out if Jesus is saying this in frustration, sadness or just stating a matter of fact. But either way, the man remains adamant for Jesus to heal his son. And he does. As we read, take note of the man’s request and Jesus’ response including the way in which Jesus heals the boy and ultimate result of that miracle.

John 3 | OVERFLOW DAILY – Jess Murrieta

7/9/20 – In Today’s reading, Jesus has a discussion with another Rabbi or teacher – named Nicadimus, who acknowledges Jesus as a Rabbi sent by God. Jesus responds by telling Him that Israel needs more than just a good teacher but a new heart and new life all together. That, one must be “born again” to inherit a place in God’s kingdom. Nicodemus is understandably confused but what he doesn’t see is all that Jesus will reveal about Himself ultimately in his death and resurrection.
