Looking for a simple way to stay connected this summer? Join the women of Grace for Well Read: our summer book gathering with a playful nod to both meaningful reads and gathering around the well of community. We’ll spend time enjoying a thoughtfully chosen book and good conversation together.
For our June book, we will be reading Dear Hemlock by Tilly Dillehay.
Written in the tradition of C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters, but for women. The book is a series of letters between an elder demon, Madame Hoaxrot, and her junior, Hemlock, as they scheme over a young woman's life. It moves through female friendship, marriage, motherhood, empathy, prayer, and aging. There are 29 short chapters, only a few pages each, so it is an easy one to keep pace with.
Note
Reviews on this book are genuinely split. Many readers find it witty, sharp and convicting; others find it heavy in places. Some find Dillehay’s proposed problems and solutions life-giving and essential, while others report them to be restrictive or too rigid. Either response is fine—just bring your thoughts and reflections as you share and listen with others!
** This month's book club is recommended for any woman who is comfortable engaging with mature themes related to temptation, marriage, sexuality, motherhood, and spiritual warfare.
